Justin M. Keyes a6d91a8d7c feat(multicursor): {Visual}[count]Q matches in Visual selection #41863
Problem:
`[count]Q` cannot be limited to a Visual selection.

Solution:
`{Visual}[count]Q` places cursors on matches within a Visual selection
(linewise).

TODO:
This works linewise, even if the visual selection is charwise/block. If
we really want to limit by charwise/block selection, then we should add
that feature to `seachpos()` or similar. Every caller of `seachpos()`
should not have to cobble together bespoke support thereof.

Justin M. Keyes fbe3a6131e fix(multicursor): {Visual}Q should not move primary cursor #41862
Problem:
`{Visual}Q` moves the primary to the top of the selection, for no
particular reason. And it's inconsistent with `[count]Q`.

Solution:
Keep the primary on the line where the selection ended, aligned to the
shared screen column so it still coincides with that line's cursor.

Justin M. Keyes 28ff47b8a4 fix(ui2): dialog messages offset by the pager line count #41839
Problem:
expand_msg() derives its start row from the pager buffer even when the
target is the cmd or dialog buffer, so the copied lines are appended
instead of replacing, and the copied extmarks are placed at pager rows in
a smaller buffer: "Invalid 'end_col': out of range", thrown inside a UI
event handler.

Solution:
Offset only when appending to a visible pager, and read the line count
after msg_clear(), whose autocmds may write to the pager. Copy marks with
`strict = false`, since the rows and columns are recomputed for a
different buffer and should clamp rather than raise.

Lewis Russell 9dd0eeb6ea refactor(help): reuse help.lua to generate build tags
Make gen_helptags.lua call help.lua instead of keeping its own tag
parser. Builds and :helptags now use the same code.

Allow the shared code to run without Neovim, and fail the build when tag
generation reports an error.

Lewis Russell d663d8f4b3 perf(help): generate helptags with LPeg
Problem: Generating helptags builds and queries a full vimdoc syntax
tree. This is much slower than the previous scanner and also happens
before discovering that the tags file cannot be written.

Solution: Extract tags with an LPeg grammar, reading each file once and
skipping example blocks and ordinary text. Open the output first so
unwritable directories can return immediately.

This restores legacy handling of tags inside inline code spans. On an
arm64 Mac, the 5.36 MB runtime corpus takes 24 ms instead of 604 ms,
with identical generated tags.

Lewis Russell efdd73c096 feat(watch): add on_error callback
Problem: Watcher failures are reported inconsistently, and callers
cannot detect when a watcher is no longer usable.

Solution: Route startup and event failures and unexpected inotifywait
exits through an optional on_error callback. Log to nvim-watch.log by
default. Ignore disappearing child directories and exits caused by
cancellation. Let LSP log failures and notify once per message, using
INFO for missing roots and ERROR otherwise, without interrupting
registration.

Lewis Russell 65ef6fdaee build: replace LuaLS with EmmyLua
Problem: LuaLS struggles with the generics used in Nvim's runtime,
requiring broad diagnostic suppressions. Indexing is also slow.

Solution: Use EmmyLua for type checks in the build and CI. It offers
more sophisticated type checking, substantially better support for
generics, and much better flow analysis.

Correct the affected annotations. Use `@internal`, supported directly by
EmmyLua, instead of `@nodoc` for shared internal declarations, and
support it in the help parser.

Volodymyr Chernetskyi d951908e12 fix(ui2): mouse movement dismisses expanded messages #41732
Problem:
cmd_on_key() tests the key it was handed against the literal string
'<MouseMove>', but at that point "typed" still holds raw key bytes. Thus
the comparison never holds and the branch its own comment describes
is dead. Moving the mouse over an expanded cmdline collapses it.

Solution:
Translate the key once, up front, so every comparison in the function
sees the same form.

Volodymyr Chernetskyi 06bff27929 feat(ui2): highlight the [+x] spill indicator with MoreMsg #41679
Problem:
The "spill" indicator that ui2 appends when messages overflow the
available height is drawn with whatever highlight the message tail
happens to have, so it is indistinguishable from the message text.

Solution:
Give the [+x] chunks an explicit `MoreMsg` highlight, and only fall back
to the message tail highlight for chunks that don't carry one of their
own.

Volodymyr Chernetskyi b21f2094ba feat(ui2): scroll the dialog window with the mouse wheel #41682
Problem:
The ui2 dialog implements paging for the arrow keys, Home/End and the
page keys, but not for the mouse wheel. When `mouse` contains `"c"`,
turning the wheel does nothing at all.

Solution:

Problem:

Solution:
`]C` adds a cursor at the current position before jumping. This

Lewis Russell ce8a897f98 feat(lua): add vim.async
Problem: Nvim has many Lua APIs that start callback-driven work: timers,
jobs, libuv handles, and other event-loop tasks. Callers that need to
sequence or cancel that work have to build their own coroutine wrappers,
task bookkeeping, and cleanup rules. This makes async control flow hard
to share, test, and document.

Solution: Add `vim.async`, a structured-concurrency module vendored from
async.nvim. It provides task handles, await/pawait helpers,
sleep/timeout helpers, completion-order iteration, and semaphores on top
of Nvim's event loop.

The API follows the same broad model as Trio: async work has an owner,
tasks are awaited explicitly, and cancellation is cooperative. Include
generated vimdoc with an introductory overview and examples, a news
entry, and functional tests for the new module.

Sébastien Hoffmann 3808c00fc8 fix(statusline): default 'statusline' improvements #41597
Problem: there should be exactly one cell of padding between sections,
and exactly one cell of minimum padding between the left and the right.
- Spaces between sections waste space when a section is empty.
  According to a comment in #33036, this was the reason to avoid `%k`
  and implement the keymap section with a vim expression, but other
  sections still have this problem.
- The diagnostics section wastes space because it is not entirely empty
  when there are diagnostics in another buffer.
- The terminal exit code section can touch the right side, e.g. the
  ruler, even though it belongs to the left side.
Solution:
- Use auto-hiding item groups (`%(` without width fields) to get rid of
  unneeded spaces when a section shows no information.
  This simplifies the 'showcmd' and 'keymap' sections in particular.
- As a slight simplification, `term_exitcode` is moved into the flags
  section since it is formatted with square brackets like a flag.
- Count the diagnostics for the current buffer specifically.
- Ensure at least one cell of padding between the left and the right
  side by adding a space next to the separator `%=`.

Problem: some sections are implemented with `%{%`, even though
reevaluation of the expression result is not needed.
This leads to otherwise needless %-escaping in `progress_status`.
Solution: use `%{` instead.

Problem: `%{` and `%{%` (without items) replace spaces with fillchars.
This looks out-of-place inside the terminal exit code section, and in
contrast to all other sections, the 'busy' section is surrounded by
fillchars, which looks inconsistent, and with some terminal-font
combinations, ◐ overlaps the fillchar, e.g. Alacritty & JetBrains Mono.
Solution: use non-breaking spaces U+202F to avoid fillchar substitution.

Problem: sections that appear/disappear frequently can make otherwise
more stable sections jump around a lot.
Solution: sort the sections on the right roughly by volatility:
'showcmd' in first place, 'keymap' next to the ruler.

zeertzjqandHirohito Higashi 749e0a06c2 vim-patch:9.2.1031: 'wildmode' list:full does not show 'wildmenu'
Problem: With 'wildmode' set to list:full the matches are listed but the
          wildmenu is not shown, although it is "full" that starts
          wildmenu mode (zeertzjq).
Solution: List the matches and show the menu, as the two behaviors in
          the same phase ask for. The menu is left to the phases that
          ask for it, so that "list" on its own still only lists
          (Hirohito Higashi).

Justin M. Keyes 9a29622b54 feat(multicursor): MC HAMMER #41587
Other (squashed) commits:

fix(tui): emit ui_send output atomically with the frame

Problem:
tui_ui_send() writes directly to the TTY, bypassing the output buffer.
Sequences sent via nvim_ui_send() (e.g. kitty multiple-cursors, or
visual-dot-repeat) always arrive in a separate TTY write from the frame
they were computed for. This manifests as "tearing", or e.g. in the case
of multicursor the terminal renders text with stale cursor overlays.

Solution:
- tui_ui_send(): while a frame is being assembled (pending invalid
  regions or buffered output), buffer instead of writing directly.
  - Out-of-frame sends (tty queries, clear-on-disable) still write
    immediately.
- mcursor.lua: emit the terminal-cursor update at the end of the redraw
  cycle (`on_end`, when screen positions are final) instead of
  vim.schedule().

not_compiled 7dc0592fca fix(ui2): cursor flicker in cmdline with matchit #41245
Problem:
The cmdline_hide callback causes an unnecessary cursor move to the cmdline,
before the normal redraw updates the cursor back to the current window. This
appears as "flicker" when using plugins such as matchit (legacy ":" mappings
instead of "<cmd>" mappings).

Solution:
Skip the immediate redraw for cmdline_hide events. The normal redraw
still updates the cursor after the cmdline window is hidden.

Justin M. Keyes 02b0c80422 fix(lua): blast radius of broken _G.debug #41507
Problem:
`nlua_pcall()` references `_G.debug.traceback`. If user code deletes it
or breaks it some other way, various Lua features are broken.

    _G.debug = nil
    vim.schedule(function() end)
    vim.wait(100)

    E5113: Lua chunk: attempt to index a nil value
    stack traceback:
            [C]: in function 'loop_poll'
            [string "vim/_core/editor"]:176: in function 'wait'
            crash.lua:3: in main chunk
    PANIC: unprotected error in call to Lua API (attempt to index a nil value)

Solution:
Check `_G.debug.traceback` before using it as errfunc. If it's broken,
omit the traceback and say so in the error message.

Note: We could cache `_G.debug` in LUA_REGISTRYINDEX on startup, but
that would prevent plugins from providing custom functionality there
(and we happen to do so in `tui_spec.lua` for example).

Justin M. Keyes fb5d466a35 fix(help): :helptags on CRLF helpfiles
Problem:
The vimdoc parser does not treat "\r" as whitespace, so in a CRLF
helpfile the codeblock rule fails and "*" pairs inside examples become
tags. On Windows this generates duplicate "." and "/" tags:

    D:/a/neovim/neovim/build/bin/nvim.exe -u NONE -i NONE -e --headless -c "helptags ++t doc" -c "exe 'cquit' !empty(v:errmsg)""
    Error in command line:

    E154: Duplicate tag "/" in pattern.txt and usr_08.txt
    E154: Duplicate tag "/" in usr_08.txt and pattern.txt

Note: The old C parser was unaffected because it read helpfiles in text
mode (`os_fopen(…, "r")`).

Solution:
Strip "\r" before parsing.

Justin M. Keyes 1ef030f162 fix(help): :helptags regressions
Problem:
Parent commit regressed some behavior of the old C helptags-gen impl:
- helpfiles in sub-directories are named by basename, so :help fails
- "help-tags" always names "tags", never "tags-nl"
- E150 E151 E152 E153 are never reported
- existing tags file is not overwritten if no tags were found
- a duplicate tag aborts the run, skipping the remaining directories
- `*.TXT` and `*.FRX` (uppercase) are not recognized as helpfiles
- tree-sitter-vimdoc accepts tags that the C parser rejected: `*a|b*`
  (breaks |links|) and unterminated `*tag`
- PUC Lua "<" compares with (localized) `strcoll()`, so the tags file is
  not sorted by byte value (E432)
- requiring `vim.treesitter` at load time breaks :help itself, not just
  :helptags, where the module is unavailable
- `vim.pack` runs :helptags for plugins that have no "doc/" directory,
  so every install/update emits E150

Solution:
- Fail the build if generating helptags reports any `v:errmsg`.
- Restore old behavior: tags generated for runtime/doc are now identical
  to those from the C implementation. Errors are non-fatal messages
  instead of exceptions, so all directories are still processed.
- Load treesitter lazily, report a plain error if parser is missing.

Yochem van Rosmalen b36b3d7f3a feat(help): generate :helptags using Treesitter
Problem:
Tags are manually parsed in C which is not flexible and prone to errors.
Extending the help system to allow for other formats (e.g. Markdown)
would require a large rewrite in the C core, while with Treesitter it
only needs a query update.

Solution:
Use the power of treesitter to extract the tags from helpfiles.

- build: set `$VIMRUNTIME` when generating helptags, like
  `cmake/Util.cmake` already does for other generators.
- fix(help): only accept tags delimited by whitespace. The old C parser
  only accepted a `*tag*` preceded by start-of-line or whitespace and
  followed by whitespace or end-of-line. The vimdoc parser also captures
  tags followed by other text, e.g. `*$XDG_STATE_HOME*/.../logs` in
  starting.txt, which caused an E154 duplicate tag error for docs that
  were previously fine.

Justin M. Keyes a1de07418b feat(ui2): lift ui2 options into 'messagesopt' (part 1) #41474
Problem:
In order for ui2 to graduate to the main "messages ui" its configuration
needs to graduate into actual options.

Solution:
Migrate some of its config to 'messagesopt':
- "maxheight" (note: currently this is an integer treated as
  a "percentage"; if we want to support a row count we could allow
  values with units, like `"42%"`)
- "pager"
- "timeout"

Also improves error messages:

    messagesopt=hit-enter,history:500,progress:x  E474: 'progress' must be one of: , c

Justin M. Keyes 8c440c469b fix(ui2): ui2 misinterprets getchar() input as pager_char (CR) #41465
Problem:
`vim.on_key()` callbacks are invoked for keys that `getchar()` consumes,
which never reach the main loop, and there is no way to tell such a key
apart. With ui2 the `on_key` handler activated after interactive
cmdline, handles it as `pager_char` (thus enters the ui2 pager).

Kyle 8d406ed2ac fix(defaults): emit events on automatic background change #41242
Problem:
After #40270, events are no longer emitted from the automatic background
detection. This applies not just during startup, but also if the user
manually changes the background of their terminal.

Solution:
Set the background as normal, assuming that a normal terminal will
respond within 100 ms. Change test to match expected behavior:
- BG set during startup won't trigger user autocmds since it runs before
  any user config
- If the terminal takes longer than 100 ms to respond to initial OSC 11,
  it does trigger the OptionSet, but it is triggered through the normal
  path to ensure values like v:option_new are set #38551

Justin M. Keyes 1c1dc0558f feat(cwd): support explicit chdir (:bcd/:tcd/…) in temp context
Problem:
- Explicit `:bcd` (etc.) persists from `nvim_buf_call()` but not from an
  autocmd handler targeting a hidden buf (`LspAttach`, `TermRequest`, …),
  which needs a `vim.schedule()` workaround.
- `vim._with()` is supposed to work as a "sandbox", discarding
  side-effects, but it leaks CWD changes: `:lcd` from a `win` context,
  any chdir from a visible-buffer context.

Solution:
- Explicit :cd/:tcd/:bcd during a temp context persists by default.
  - "Ambient" directory changes ('autochdir', existing win-local CWD,
    etc.) are still undone, as before.
- Add `kCtxKeepDirs`: snapshot/restore the target's full CWD state
  (w/b/tp-local, global, cwd). Used by `vim._with()` and `'inccommand'`,
  which must not leak state.

Justin M. Keyes ab80ea92cc fix(ui2): pager handling #41179
- Avoid shared state. Pass `focus` to set_pos()/expand_msg() instead of
  a shared `pager_focus` flag: the flag is only cleared when set_pos()
  actually enters the pager, so ":messages" from inside the pager left
  it set.
- pager_shown(): the pager window is invalid after leaving it with "q".
- Reuse pager_shown() in expand_msg().

Erdiansyah a29a9130a9 fix(ui2): do not steal focus when consecutive cmds emit messages #41062
Problem: A message emitted while a previous expanded message is still
          visible opens the pager and enters it, moving focus away from
          the buffer window without an explicit request (#41061).
Solution: Only enter the pager when it was explicitly requested ("g<",
          :messages, or entered from the expanded cmdline). An unfocused
          pager is dismissed by the cmdline key handler, which stays armed
          across the cmdline and no longer dismisses on non-typed keys

Justin M. Keyes 98d767cd53 docs: func/expr options, misc #41102 2026-08-01 17:48:32 -04:00
Justin M. Keyes 726d1a92d2 feat(options): lua closure/function options
Problem:
Cannot assign Lua functions/closures to "func" ('completefunc',
'tagfun', …) or "expr" ('foldexpr', 'indentexpr', …) options.

Solution:
- Store "func"/"expr" options as `Callback` instead of string.
- Delete oceans of copy-pasted code.
- BREAKING: LuaRef returned via RPC/Vimscript is now represented as
  `"<Lua N: file:line>"` (like what `:map` shows) instead of `nil`.
- Note: `man.vim` still uses `v:lua` string, bc it's a vimscript ftplugin.

Barrett Ruth e29af9c32f refactor(zip)!: builtin zip.lua plugin #40846
Problem:
The bundled `zip` plugin is implemented in Vimscript, making it harder to
maintain and build on with Nvim's Lua runtime infrastructure.

Solution:
Add an opt-out `zip.lua` browser backed by `nvim.dir`, and disable the legacy
Vimscript implementation by moving it to `pack/dist/opt/zip/`. Load it with
`:packadd zip`.

Nathan Zeng 1dbc766fa7 fix(ui2): clear empty cmdline after backspace #41043
Problem:
Cmdline area shows stale ":" after backspacing out of the command line.

Solution:
Clear the command line for empty commands. Note that `:<CR>` will now
clear the command line too.

Justin M. Keyes fbcb7a056c feat(exmode): "1q:", :exmode #41010
Problem:
Want `gQ` for _le multicursor_.

Solution:
- Don't use `gQ` for exmode.
- Introduce `:exmode`.
- Introduce `[count]q:` as an alias to `:exmode`.

Justin M. Keyes 359459dec6 refactor(exmode): Ex-mode as cmdwin + Lua #40991
Problem:
POSIX-compatible Ex-mode requires special-cases all over the codebase to
match various quirks that don't actually matter to users.
- The main utility of *interactive* Ex-mode is its REPL behavior, and
  that can be achieved with `cmdwin`, which also gains extra UX
  benefits.
- The main utility of *non-interactive* `nvim -es` is for shell
  scripting, where Ex-mode quirks are mostly unhelpful (e.g. the
  "Entering Ex mode" message).

Solution:
- Reimplement *interactive* Ex-mode as a "persistent, insert-mode
  cmdwin" in Lua.
  - "nvim -e/-E" is simply an alias to "gQ".
- Reframe *non-interactive* Ex-mode (`nvim -es`) as "script mode".
  - Drop POSIX Ex-mode quirks.

Improvements:
- "nvim -V1 -es" output ends with a final newline!
- "nvim -V1 -es" no longer shows the "Entering Ex mode" msg. (This was
  pointless noise, unwanted for scripting purposes.)
- stdin is no longer typeahead. Scripts (":lua io.read()") can read
  stdin as data.
- Empty line is a no-op: a stray blank line no longer moves the cursor
  (deviates from POSIX ex "+1"), no longer exits 1 at EOF (E501).

Preserved behavior:
- cursor starts at "$"
- mode()=="cv" (for non-interactive)
- multiline commands (:append/:function/heredoc pull continuation lines)
- bare-range print
- :print=>stdout
- -V1=>stderr
- CRLF input
- continue-after-error and exit codes

Dropped (regressed) POSIX behavior (non-interactive):
- Event loop only ticks while/between commands, not while blocked
  waiting for a stdin line.
- ":g/pat/visual...Q"
- input()/getchar()/":s/x/y/c" no longer consume stdin lines as
  answers: Nvim stops at end-of-input, skipping the rest of the script,
  exit 0. Use ":lua io.read()" instead.
  - If users care about this they should use interactive Ex-mode (`gQ`).
- ":@r" stops at end of the register instead of continuing to read
  cmdline input from stdin.

Rob Pilling c57818bb43 fix(ui2): avoid flickering fileinfo messages #41002
## Flicker cause

ui2's `check_targets()` function creates the hidden ui2 windows with this call chain:
```
nvim_open_win()
win_set_buf()
do_buffer()
set_curbuf()
enter_buffer()
```

and `enter_buffer()` sets `need_fileinfo`:

https://github.com/neovim/neovim/blob/fdc09be03cb10a1e11a31abd2ddd96d3f131b486/src/nvim/buffer.c#L1837-L1839

This is then picked up by `normal_redraw`:

https://github.com/neovim/neovim/blob/fdc09be03cb10a1e11a31abd2ddd96d3f131b486/src/nvim/normal.c#L1381-L1385

The fileinfo message then causes a ui2 window to appear to display it:

https://github.com/neovim/neovim/blob/fdc09be03cb10a1e11a31abd2ddd96d3f131b486/runtime/lua/vim/_core/ui2/messages.lua#L325-L330

... which ends up calling `set_pos`, which registers an `on_key` handler:

https://github.com/neovim/neovim/blob/fdc09be03cb10a1e11a31abd2ddd96d3f131b486/runtime/lua/vim/_core/ui2/messages.lua#L726-L728

This handler closes the ui2 window when the user presses, for example, `l` (because the user's not focusing said window).
The handler eventually calls `check_targets()`:

https://github.com/neovim/neovim/blob/fdc09be03cb10a1e11a31abd2ddd96d3f131b486/runtime/lua/vim/_core/ui2/messages.lua#L594-L595

and `check_targets()` takes us back to the beginning, causing the ui2 window flicker

## Repro

```vim
=require("vim._core.ui2").enable()
set ch=0 shm-=F ve=all
e /tmp/x
```

Then hit `Ctrl-G` to show fileinfo (if not already shown) and hold `l`

## Fix

Effectively surround the ui2 window creating with `:silent`
