Review finding "Error traps run twice": the PIPESTATUS capture restored the command's status with `(exit $__hermes_rc)` as the last command inside the eval. A non-zero restore is itself a failing command, so a user's ERR trap ran a second time (`trap 'echo T' ERR; false` printed T twice; main prints it once). The restore now sits on the left of `&& :`. The list keeps the status, and bash fires neither ERR nor errexit for a command on the left of &&, so the eval returns exactly what main's plain eval returns.
