From 01b6651bcf53233e5ebe4bafa1c94d821073caa0 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Claude Date: Fri, 16 Oct 2026 20:01:21 +0000 Subject: [PATCH 01/12] feat(mcp): webhook-mode MCP events client (experimental) Implements the client side of the MCP events design sketch (modelcontextprotocol/experimental-ext-triggers-events) for webhook delivery. A server opted in with `events: true` gets list_events, subscribe_event and unsubscribe_event utility tools. Each subscription is a dynamic webhook route with its own whsec_ secret; the webhook adapter answers the server's signed verification challenge, handles the terminated and gap envelopes, and dedupes occurrences by eventId. The MCP server task refreshes every subscription before its granted lifetime runs out, and again on reconnect. Per-server metrics (requests, accepted, declined, errors) are tracked on the handler. +## MCP Events (experimental) + +Some MCP servers can notify an agent when something happens upstream (a new email, an incident, a +new item in a feed) through the `events/*` methods of the +[MCP events design sketch](https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/experimental-ext-triggers-events/blob/main/docs/design-sketch-proposal.md). +The proposal is still a working-group draft. Hermes implements its **webhook** delivery mode: the +server POSTs each event to the gateway's [webhook listener](../messaging/webhooks.md), and every +event starts an agent run like any other webhook route. + +Turn it on per server, and tell Hermes the public HTTPS address of the webhook listener (servers +reject plain-HTTP callbacks, so put a TLS-terminating reverse proxy or tunnel in front of port 8644): + +```yaml +mcp_servers: + ambush: + url: "https://example.com/mcp" + events: true # registers the event utility tools for this server + +platforms: + webhook: + enabled: true + extra: + public_url: "https://hermes.example.com" +``` + +The server then gets three more utility tools: + +- `list_events`: the event types the server offers, and your current subscriptions to them +- `subscribe_event`: subscribe with the event's arguments, what to do when it arrives + (`instructions`) and where each run's result goes (`deliver`, `deliver_chat_id`); you are asked to + approve every subscription, since it starts unattended agent runs +- `unsubscribe_event`: cancel a subscription + +Each subscription is stored as a dynamic webhook route (`hermes webhook list` shows it) with its own +`whsec_` signing secret. Hermes answers the server's signed verification challenge, deduplicates +events by `eventId`, and refreshes the subscription before the lifetime the server granted runs out +while the MCP connection is up (and again whenever it reconnects). If the server ends a +subscription, Hermes removes the route and tells the `deliver` target. Events only arrive while +`hermes gateway run` is running. Event payloads are external data: event runs use the same +constrained webhook toolset as other webhook routes. +The listener's per-route rate limit (`platforms.webhook.extra.rate_limit`, 30 a minute by default) +applies to event deliveries too; raise it for a busy event type, since a server may not retry a +rejected delivery. + +Not supported yet: the `poll` and `push` delivery modes, and subscriptions made from a secondary +profile under `gateway.multiplex_profiles`. + ## Running Hermes as an MCP server In addition to connecting **to** MCP servers, Hermes can also **be** an MCP server. This lets other MCP-capable agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or any MCP client) use Hermes's messaging capabilities — list conversations, read message history, and send messages across all your connected platforms. From 4608cdc3a7f7afc832e99385e292d62c52a53bb9 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: emozilla Date: Tue, 20 Oct 2026 23:34:16 -0400 Subject: [PATCH 02/12] fix(mcp): keep event subscription state out of the webhook route An admitted webhook run pins a digest of its route config, and the gateway refuses the run's reply when the route has changed since. The events client wrote the replay cursor and the grant into the route, so the next event, a gap notice or a refresh dropped the reply of every run still in flight, and a redelivered event whose cursor had moved on got 503 on every retry. The grant, the cursor and the granted callback URL now live in mcp_event_subscriptions.json, written under the webhook store's lock. The route holds the subscription's fixed contract, and an unchanged resubscribe writes it back byte for byte. --- gateway/platforms/webhook_mcp_events.py | 21 ++-- tests/gateway/test_webhook_mcp_events.py | 30 ++++- tests/tools/test_mcp_events.py | 31 +++-- tools/mcp_tool_events.py | 150 +++++++++++++++-------- website/docs/user-guide/features/mcp.md | 4 +- 5 files changed, 167 insertions(+), 69 deletions(-) diff --git a/gateway/platforms/webhook_mcp_events.py b/gateway/platforms/webhook_mcp_events.py index 4e717132a0..c723a10918 100644 --- a/gateway/platforms/webhook_mcp_events.py +++ b/gateway/platforms/webhook_mcp_events.py @@ -33,19 +33,18 @@ def mcp_event_delivery_id(route_config: dict, payload: Any) -> Optional[str]: return f"mcp-event:{event_id}" if isinstance(event_id, str) and event_id else None -def _update_event_block(route_name: str, **changes: Any) -> None: - from hermes_cli.webhook import _mutate_subscriptions - - def mutate(subscriptions: dict) -> None: - route = subscriptions.get(route_name) - if isinstance(route, dict) and isinstance(route.get("mcp_event"), dict): - subscriptions[route_name] = {**route, "mcp_event": {**route["mcp_event"], **changes}} - _mutate_subscriptions(mutate) +def _store_cursor(route_name: str, cursor: str) -> None: + # Subscription state lives beside the route, never in it: an admitted run's reply is checked against + # a digest of the route config, so a cursor written there would strand every run still in flight. + from tools.mcp_tool_events import store_cursor + store_cursor(route_name, cursor) def _remove_route(route_name: str) -> None: from hermes_cli.webhook import _mutate_subscriptions + from tools.mcp_tool_events import drop_state _mutate_subscriptions(lambda subscriptions: subscriptions.pop(route_name, None)) + drop_state(route_name) async def _verification(adapter, route_name: str, route_config: dict, payload: dict, profile) -> Any: @@ -74,7 +73,7 @@ async def _terminated(adapter, route_name: str, route_config: dict, payload: dic async def _gap(adapter, route_name: str, route_config: dict, payload: dict, profile) -> Any: cursor = payload.get("cursor") if isinstance(cursor, str) and cursor: - await asyncio.to_thread(_update_event_block, route_name, cursor=cursor) + await asyncio.to_thread(_store_cursor, route_name, cursor) logger.warning("[webhook] MCP event route %s: the server skipped events (gap); resuming from a fresh cursor", route_name) return _json({"status": "gap"}) @@ -93,6 +92,6 @@ async def handle_mcp_event_control(adapter, route_name: str, route_config: dict, if handler is not None: return await handler(adapter, route_name, route_config, payload, profile) cursor = payload.get("cursor") - if isinstance(cursor, str) and cursor and cursor != route_config["mcp_event"].get("cursor"): - await asyncio.to_thread(_update_event_block, route_name, cursor=cursor) + if isinstance(cursor, str) and cursor: + await asyncio.to_thread(_store_cursor, route_name, cursor) return None diff --git a/tests/gateway/test_webhook_mcp_events.py b/tests/gateway/test_webhook_mcp_events.py index 96ca155f8b..72585b12dd 100644 --- a/tests/gateway/test_webhook_mcp_events.py +++ b/tests/gateway/test_webhook_mcp_events.py @@ -90,11 +90,13 @@ async def test_occurrence_runs_once_per_event_id(home): @pytest.mark.asyncio async def test_terminated_drops_the_route(home): + (home / "mcp_event_subscriptions.json").write_text(json.dumps({ROUTE: {"cursor": "c-1"}})) adapter = _adapter() async with TestClient(TestServer(_app(adapter))) as cli: resp = await _post(cli, {"type": "terminated", "error": {"code": -32024, "message": "Forbidden"}}) assert resp.status == 200 assert ROUTE not in _routes(home) + assert ROUTE not in json.loads((home / "mcp_event_subscriptions.json").read_text()) adapter.handle_message.assert_not_called() @@ -104,5 +106,31 @@ async def test_gap_remembers_the_fresh_cursor(home): async with TestClient(TestServer(_app(adapter))) as cli: resp = await _post(cli, {"type": "gap", "cursor": "c-9"}) assert resp.status == 200 - assert _routes(home)[ROUTE]["mcp_event"]["cursor"] == "c-9" + assert json.loads((home / "mcp_event_subscriptions.json").read_text())[ROUTE]["cursor"] == "c-9" adapter.handle_message.assert_not_called() + + +@pytest.mark.asyncio +async def test_subscription_state_changes_do_not_strand_an_admitted_run(home): + # The durable admission pins a digest of the route config, and the reply leg refuses a route + # that changed since. On an `untrusted` server, every write-capable tool call (any tool without a `readOnlyHint: true` annotation) requires user approval through the standard approval surface before it runs. `readOnlyHint` is a server-supplied *hint* — a lying server can at most skip approval for tools it claims are read-only, never gain extra access — so mark any server you don't fully control as `untrusted`. The same hint decides whether a call is transparently retried after the transport session expires mid-call: only `readOnlyHint: true` tools are replayed, while unannotated (write-capable) tools return an `outcome_uncertain` error — on a Streamable-HTTP server that expires idle sessions this means the first unannotated call after an idle period may fail and must be verified before re-invoking.
